Each year in Georgia, more than 10,000 babies are born with or develop conditions that affect typical growth and learning. If ignored, even seemingly mild delays can become more severe as children age. Early intervention and family/caregiver support can make a significant difference in helping these children reach their developmental potential.
Since 1989, the Babies Can’t Wait program has been helping tens of thousands of Georgia's families to better understand their child’s development, as well as how to support their children’s growth and development.
The program is a part of the Georgia Department of Human Resources, under the Division of Public Health, and is a statewide early intervention system that helps eligible children, from birth to 3 years of age who are at risk for developmental delays and disabilities.
Through our 18 offices, eligible children and families in every county in Georgia can access early intervention (EI) services.
Babies Can’t Wait has been redesigned to make it more efficient, effective, and responsive to eligible children and their families. In 2006, we had over 11,000 children enrolled, compared to 6,900 in 2000. The program is working to increase its efficiency when supporting children and families, while still maintaining quality and effectiveness for each individual child and family.
